ORDER YOUR NUT TREES NOW!

Transition Town Manchester - Hazelnut Planting Project

Time is running out! Order your Hazelnuts by April 8….Following last year’s successful Fruit Tree Planting Project, Transition Town Manchester is selling and planting hazelnut bushes this spring.

The mission of TTM is to engage the community to reduce dependency on oil, promote sustainable living and revitalize our local economy. The hazelnuts they are planting will be extremely hardy and very prolific nut producers. They make a great hedge and will provide beautiful fall foliage while feeding us.

TTM will be taking orders and coordinating the planting for the end of April. The price for the bushes will be $15 each with a minimum order of two for cross-pollination. Volunteers will dig holes and plant the bushes for an additional $10 each. Get your order in today!

Download the order form here. Thanks!

Manchester Community and Education Garden

The 2 acre Manchester Community and Education Garden is an organic garden located in Manchester at the Dana L. Thompson Park (340 Park Recreation Road, Manchester Center, VT). The property is owned by Manchester Elementary Middle School.

The Community and Education Garden is a partnership with Transition Town Manchester, The Tutorial Center and Manchester Elementary Middle School.

This past year The Tutorial Center’s Youth Agriculture Project utilized the garden to provide education and job readiness skills for at risk youth. For more information on this project click here.

Transition Town Manchester was responsible for promoting and cultivating the community garden for the past three years. This year the Tutorial Center’s Youth Agriculture Project (YAP) will serve as the coordinator for the Manchester Community and Education Garden. Hilary Batchelor the YAP coordinator will be the contact person for community members interested in; having a garden space, promoting the partnership, or cultivating the Manchester community project.

This year Manchester Elementary Middle School will be utilizing the garden for hands on education. We are in the process of developing ideas of how students will participate either during or after school, with parent child classes and/or working with elders in the community.

A few local gardeners have participated in the past and we are looking for more local participation this 2011 growing season. We are researching installing a well to create easier access to water for the garden.
